September is shaping up to be one of the best months of the year to fish Tampa Bay. Coming off the big moon in August, we have seen an excellent redfish bite, along with good numbers of snook, spotted seatrout, mangrove snapper, and Spanish mackerel throughout the bay.
September also brings one of the most anticipated opportunities of the year for Tampa anglers: the short 30-day gag grouper season. With strong inshore fishing and additional nearshore opportunities, September into October is one of our favorite times of year to be on the water.
If you’re planning a trip to the area, our private Tampa Bay fishing charters can be customized around the species providing the best opportunities when you arrive.

Redfish Bite Is Strong Across Tampa Bay
Redfish have been one of the highlights of our recent trips. Coming off the big moon in August, we’ve been finding a very good redfish bite throughout Tampa Bay.
September is an excellent time to target reds as fish begin transitioning into their early-fall patterns. Depending on the tides and conditions, we’re finding fish around productive flats, shorelines, and other areas holding bait.
Some days provide opportunities to find groups of redfish, while other days require covering water and fishing productive areas as the tide changes.
For anglers specifically interested in redfish, snook, trout, and other shallow-water species, our Tampa Bay inshore fishing charters give us the flexibility to follow the best bite throughout the bay.
Snook Fishing Remains Productive
Snook fishing has also remained productive as we move through September. Tampa Bay provides an enormous amount of habitat for snook, including mangrove shorelines, flats, passes, channels, and areas with strong moving water.
Where we’re finding the best snook action changes with the tides, bait movement, and weather conditions. Rather than fishing one area every day, our captains adjust each trip around what the fish are doing.
September into October can be an excellent period to target snook as Tampa Bay transitions toward fall.
Spotted Seatrout Along the Edges of the Flats
Spotted seatrout have been providing consistent action along the edges of the grass flats throughout Tampa Bay.
The transition from shallow grass into slightly deeper water gives trout access to bait and comfortable water temperatures, making these edges productive places to fish.
Trout are also a great species for families and newer anglers because they can provide steady action when conditions line up correctly. On many of our inshore trips, trout can be part of a mixed bag that also includes redfish, snook, snapper, and mackerel.
Mangrove Snapper Are Providing Plenty of Action
We’re also catching good numbers of mangrove snapper throughout Tampa Bay.
Mangrove snapper are aggressive, hard-fighting fish and can provide excellent action for anglers of all experience levels. They can be found around a variety of structure throughout the bay, and when the bite turns on, the action can be fast.
They’re another reason we like fishing Tampa Bay during this time of year. September doesn’t force us to rely on one species—the diversity of the fishery gives our captains plenty of options when planning each trip.
Spanish Mackerel Are Feeding Around Tampa Bay
Spanish mackerel have been another productive September target, particularly around the edges of the flats and areas holding concentrations of bait.
When mackerel locate schools of baitfish, the fishing can get exciting quickly. Their speed and aggressive strikes make them a fun addition to an inshore or nearshore Tampa Bay fishing trip.
Finding bait is often an important part of finding these fish, so we’ll adjust locations throughout the day as conditions and bait movement change.
September Gag Grouper Fishing in Tampa Bay
One of the biggest fishing opportunities this September is gag grouper.
The short 30-day season creates a limited window for anglers who want to specifically target these powerful fish. September gives us the opportunity to combine Tampa Bay’s excellent early-fall fishing with one of the year’s most anticipated grouper opportunities.
Gag grouper can be targeted around productive structure in Tampa Bay and the nearby Gulf, with the exact fishing plan depending on weather, conditions, and where we’re finding fish.
Because the season is short, anglers interested specifically in grouper fishing should plan their trips while the opportunity is available.
